Caring for custom furniture in the tropics: a five-minute routine
Care guides usually fail for one reason: they ask too much. Nobody oils a table monthly. So here is the routine we genuinely follow at home — built around what damages furniture in Malaysia, in order of how much damage it actually does.
What actually ages furniture here
Swing, not sweat. Wood tolerates steady humidity surprisingly well. What stresses joints and panels is the daily cycle: aircon drying the room to 55% at night, then 85% humidity flooding back in the morning. The single best thing you can do costs nothing — avoid pointing aircon vents directly at solid wood pieces.
Sun, quietly. Afternoon sun through glass fades lacquer and lightens walnut in months, not years. Sheer curtains or window film solve it entirely.
Water rings, immediately. A wet glass left overnight can mark an oiled finish. Coasters are not fussy — they are cheaper than refinishing.
The five-minute weekly routine
- Dust with a barely damp microfibre cloth, then wipe dry. No sprays — most supermarket polishes leave silicone that complicates future refinishing.
- Wipe spills when you see them. That is the entire rule.
- Check that nothing hot or wet is sitting directly on wood. Move it. Done.
The twice-a-year fifteen minutes
- Oiled finishes: apply a thin coat of the maintenance oil we supply at handover, wait twenty minutes, buff off. The surface will drink exactly what it needs.
- Lacquered and painted surfaces: nothing but a clean. The finish is the protection; adding product does not help it.
- Hinges and runners: a single drop of light oil on door hinges; runners want a vacuum of their tracks, not lubricant.
What you can safely ignore
Fine surface scratches on oiled wood blend in with the next oiling. Small dents in solid timber can often be steamed out — call us before attempting this on veneer. And the gentle colour deepening of teak and nyatoh over years is not damage; it is the reason people buy real wood in the first place.
When to call the workshop
Doors that no longer align, drawers that scrape, any lifting of veneer edges, or water damage that has turned a surface pale — these are ten-minute fixes for us and weekend-ruining experiments for you. Warranty clients: adjustment visits are free for the full warranty period, so please call early, not late.
